The Applied Mathematics major is for students who seek a strong mathematical background and the ability to apply mathematics in other fields. Students may choose from a wide variety of courses in subjects such as statistics, numerical analysis, real and complex analysis, Fourier analysis, linear and nonlinear programming, ordinary and partial differential equations, dynamical systems, algebraic coding theory, bioinformatics, and optimization. Students also take courses outside the Department of Mathematics in fields where math is applied. In addition to 52 hours of mathematics course requirements, at least 16 hours of extra-departmental coursework at the 200 level or above is required in a chosen area.
